London is filled with magical (and delicious) delights for families this summer. Fabulous museums, fairytale castles and even a pirate ship (at the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Playground) all beckon. But perhaps the most scrumptious attraction for families is the new afternoon tea which has just launched at The Chesterfield Mayfair to celebrate the fact that Roald Dahl's beloved book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, is premiering as a new musical at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on June 25.
Each afternoon (from May to September) Charlie & the Chesterfield Afternoon Tea takes guests on a journey through the sweet, colorful and, of course, chocolate-y world of Charlie and his friends. If your kids have read Roald Dahl's enchanting classic or seen either of the film incarnations, they will consider this tea a peak experience.
The Chesterfield Mayfair is already famous as one of London's best places for afternoon tea, having won the "Award of Excellence" from the Tea Guild for an "Outstanding Afternoon Tea" three years in a row. The Charlie tea cranks the feast of creative sweet treats up a notch, providing everything a Roald Dahl fan could possibly want, except for the Oompa-Loompas.
Upon arrival at the luxurious, four-star hotel, guests are welcomed with a shot of a Fizzy Lifting Drink (complete with a lingering sparkle on the tongue) that creates heightened expectations and sets imaginations loose to enjoy the bounty that follows. A choice of teas includes a special Willy Wonka Chocolate tea, which is a Ceylon black tea infused with the flavor of rich, dark chocolate to astonish your taste buds.
If you have a sweet tooth, expect it to be rewarded with the afternoon tea stand containing an Oompa-Loompa Cupcake, a Golden Egg, a Blueberry Macaroon, a Fizzy Lifting Cake, a selection of Chocolate Chip Scones, a selection of Fruit Scones served with Clotted Cream and Jam, and, of course, the famous Wonka Bar.
Traditional finger sandwiches complement the goodies, including ham and cheese with tomato chutney, egg and watercress on basil, smoked salmon and cream cheese, chicken with grain mustard mayonnaise on white, and the classic cucumber and cream cheese.
As a finishing touch to this culinary adventure, each guest finishes off with an Everlasting Gobstopper, candy cane and lollipop, the ideal selection of sweets to savor on the way home.
But there's even more magic afoot at this very special tea than meets the eye. Each guest leaves with an envelope containing a Chesterfield Mayfair Golden Ticket, so you can feel as rich as Charlie does when he finds the Golden Ticket in Roald Dahl's book. Each Golden Ticket offers you a chance to win a selection of fantastical surprises at the hotel, with every ticket a guaranteed win. Prizes vary from a two-night weekend stay in a Junior Suite to a complimentary glass of champagne on your next visit.
But don't let your curiosity get the best of you and open the envelope right away, as each Golden Ticket is meant to be a mystery, with the prize revealed only upon your next visit to The Chesterfield Mayfair. Just like any good storybook adventure, good things come to those who wait.
Charlie and the Chesterfield Afternoon Tea is priced at $52 per person, plus service charge, and is available daily at the intimate and opulent Butlers Restaurant, famously the home of "the best Dover Sole in London."
