The annual Charleston Art Auction will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012 at the Doubletree Guest Suites at 181 Church St., just off Market St., in downtown Charleston, SC. The preview is from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm.
An online catalog is available on their website, www.charlestonartauction.com. This year there is no admission fee. Both telephone and absentee bids are accepted. There is a buyer’s premium of 15%.
This is the best art auction in Charleston. Many of the artists have a Charleston connection and paint Charleston Lowcountry scenes. Among the artist are Elizabeth O’Neill Verner, Joseph Orr, Karen Larson Turner, Stephen Chesley, Betty Anglin Smith, Andrew Wyeth, and Mandy Johnson. There is a large painting by Jonathan Green, 66” by 101”, entitled “Memories” that is estimated to sell for $80,000-$120,000.
Another large painting by Clark Hulings, 30” by 24”, is expected to sell for over $60,000.00. However, not everything is high priced, with some paintings expected to sell in the $300 - $500 range.
It is sponsored by Jack Morris of Morris & Whiteside Galleries in Hilton Head, SC, along with Ben Whiteside, Jr. and David Leahy. Joe and Janie Sylvan of the local Sylvan Gallery at 171 King St. (843-722-2172) are also sponsors.
This is not only a great opportunity to buy the very best art in South Carolina, but also a guaranteed good time taking part in a very exciting auction. After the auction is over they will post the results on their website. Sometimes everything does not sell and may be available to purchase at a later date, so contact them if you are interested in anything that does not sell the night of the auction.
