Medicine is a field that in the early times there were few African Americans Surgeons. Charles R. Drew MD started his adventure in Chicago, IL. He founded the early blood Bank to supply the needed blood for surgery. The University was founded in honor of him, and charted in 1966. It is the only African educational University west of the Mississippi, located in south central Los Angeles. In 1983 the University established the College of Allied Health. The University also has a program for Physician Assistant students, the students received a Bachelor of Science Degree in June of 1988.
The University has excellent bus service and is near the airport, as well as Long Beach, and Santa Ana. The school was originally founded to train students to serve the underserved population, that did not have physicians to perform the medical needs of the communities.
The college of Medicine is a learning center for preventive medicine. They have a research center, with 30 community programs. Their programs address teenage pregnancy, AIDS, cancer, Family Planning, Neuroscience, Alcoholism and Geriatrics.
The cost of attend the University is low and could be under $1,000 per semester.

Some Minority students feel more comfortable in a surrounding where the people and instructors look like them. However, any student can attend the University.
