Charles Island has been home to many endeavors since being purchased from the Indians in 1639. A retreat for monks and a hotel are among some of the past uses for this island. The best part about this Island destination is that you can only get to it by walking on a sandbar that is 1/2 mile long. The Sandbar is only there during low tide. It is free to walk out to it and explore. The Island is surrounded completely by water except for a narrow sandbar that is uncovered during low tide so it is important you plan the time of your arrival. There are signs cautioning about the dangerous undertow once the sandbar starts to get covered up with the incoming tide, so it is very important to pay attention to the tide tables. This is a great destination for summer, spring, or fall. In the fall the Island is brilliant with fall foliage.
