Charles Island, which is less than a mile off the shore of Milford, Connecticut is a beautiful and historic place to visit . Legend has it that Captain Kidd buried treasure on this island that has never been found. It is also said to be a very haunted island. Best of all, it is a free place to go.

Milford Ct. - Milford is on Long Island Sound and it is also home to Charles Island. It is an Island with a haunting past of pirates and curses. Captain Kidd is said to have buried treasure there in iron chests. The Island is a 14 acre bird sanctuary now, but it was much more in the past. Charles Island has been home to many endeavors since being purchased from the Indians in 1639. A retreat for monks and a hotel are among some of the past uses for this island. There are no remaining structures, just ruins. Nothing has lasted for long on this Island, new endeavors would fail within no time, maybe because it is haunted?

The best part about this Island destination is that you can only get to it by walking on a sandbar that is 1/2 mile long. The Sandbar is only there during low tide. It is free to walk out to it and explore. The Island is surrounded completely by water except for a narrow sandbar that is uncovered during low tide so it is important you plan the time of your arrival. There are signs cautioning about the dangerous undertow once the sandbar starts to get covered up with the incoming tide, so it is very important to pay attention to the tide tables. This is a great destination for summer, spring, or fall. In the fall the Island is brilliant with fall foliage.

Charles Island- is located in Silver Sands State Park in Milford Ct. You take exit 35 off 95 and follow signs to Rt 1 then follow the signs to Silver Sands State Park.
