Charles Davis previews Super Bowl, sleeper MVP candidate & talks Tyler Bray

For a preview of this year’s Super Bowl in New Orleans between the San Francisco 49’ers and Baltimore Ravens, I reached out to one of the great football analysts going today, Charles Davis.

Charles Davis spent last week at the Senior Bowl in Mobile working on the NFL Network’s week-long coverage. Charles is analyzing the Super Bowl this week for the NFL Network. Charles is also an analyst for FOX Sports.

Brendan Quinn and I were fortunate enough to once again visit with the former Tennessee Volunteers football standout this week on the “News Sentinel Sports Page” radio talk show. Some quotes from our visit are below.

To hear our entire interview with Charles Davis, click the video to the left.

Charles Davis bottom-lines the key in the Super Bowl:

“This game is going to come down to more than Colin Kaepernick’s legs and his ability to run the ball. I think he’s going to have to win the game throwing the football more so than running it.”

His off-the-radar Super Bowl MVP candidate:

“Let’s go Dashon Goldson, safety, San Francisco 49’ers. Why? His ability to blitz. His ability to cover. He’s a ball-hawk. Ball pops free, he could jump on a couple of them. I think it’ll be more of a defensive game.”

Thoughts on Tennessee TE Mychal Rivera at the Senior Bowl:

“Liked the young man. Very personable. I think he did a very nice job all week long. He’s a little light in the backside, so blocking people is going to be a real challenge for him.”

Thoughts on DL Montori Hughes from Tennessee-Martin:

“Never shut-up. All week, just yap-yap-yap-yap-yap, but made some plays along the way. Intriguing kind of guy. One GM told me ‘I got to get to know him a little bit better to know everything that’s coming out of his mouth. Is it a positive or negative.”

Does Tennessee QB Tyler Bray have a chance to be selected in the 1st Round of the NFL Draft?:

“He does, but I think it’s a very slim one.”

On first meeting Bray at the Manning Passing Academy:

“Couldn’t have had a worse first impression. Could not. By the end of the week, he had grown on me some.”

Charles gave his NFL Draft round ranges for Mychal Rivera, Dallas Thomas and Montori Hughes; shared his Super Bowl winner; had a funny line from the classic TV show “I Love Lucy” and much more.
