Charity Knitting: The Mother Bear Project

Put a smile on a childs face with a hand-made bear. The Mother Bear Project, based in Minnesota, gives the stuffed bears to children with HIV/Aids in Haiti, and many countries in Africa.  It is a gift of comfort and hope which lets a child know that somebody loves them.

The bears can be knit or chrocheted.  For a $5 donation, the Mother Bear Project will send you a pattern.  You can also get a complete kit, including knitting needles or crochet hook, the pattern and yarn, and a tag for you to sign.  A great way to get started and all the proceeds from your $20 donation go to support The Mother Bear Project.  It would also make a thoughtful gift for other crafty people.

The knitting pattern is suitable for knitters of all experience levels.  Knitters who have participated in the project agree, it’s a great way to use up yarns left over from other projects.

There are several other ways to support this wonderful project.  You can sponsor a bear for $10, and the Mother Bear Project will also accept donations of supplies such as yarn, knitting needles, and packing materials.

Although the same pattern is used, you can personalize each bear with your choice of colors and details.  This is a fun and satisfying project in which to participate.

Many of us are like Amanda C., who says “I am not very wealthy, I’m not able to donate big wads of cash to all the good causes out there, but I can afford $3 at a time (shipping cost of the bear).”

It’s satisfying to be part of a group who are knitting along with you - even when you’re not physically together.  Knowing the bear is being played with brings happiness to all those who participate.
