Charitable thrift stores in Chicago

Start the new year with a little less clutter  by donating little used or unwanted items to Chicago-area thrift stores. Thrift stores reduce waste by facilitating the sale of usable goods and provide great deals on gently used items.  Last year, Goodwill thrift stores alone kept 38,886,595 pounds of usable clothing and other items from entering landfills.

In addition to being good for the environment, many Chicago area thrift stores provide funding for area charities and non-profits.  Here is a run down of charitable thrift stores in Chicago.

The ARK Thrift Shop:
The ARK Thrift store is located at 1302 N. Milwaukee Ave. It sells gently used furniture house hold items, appliances and clothing. The ARK Thrift store raises money for The ARK , a Chicago based non-profit that supports Jewish families and individuals in distress by providing free social and medical services.

Brown Elephant Resale Store:
The Brown Elephant Resale Store helps support the efforts of Chicago based Howard Brown Health Center. The Howard Brown Health Center provides medical and behavioral health services to people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered on a sliding scale to ensure access to care. Revenue from the Brown Elephant thrift stores helps cover the cost of care for under- or uninsured Howard Brown clients.

Goodwill Thrift Store:
Goodwill Industries helps people with disabilities or disadvantages seek greater independence by providing training, employment and other services through the operation of Goodwill Thrift Stores.

Salvation Army Family Thrift Store:

The Salvation Army is a Christian church which strives to ‘do the most good’ by providing spiritual, physical, social and emotional support to those in need. One of the ways the Salvation Army benefits others is through their Salvation Army Family Thrift Stores.
