RALEIGH -- The Raleigh Police Depatrment has filed charges against two people connected with the 70 animals removed from a Professor St. home.
Raleigh Police PIO Jim Sughrue confirmed Friday that charges were filed against two Raleigh women that lived at the home.
"46-yr old Carolyn Sue Burnham and 57-yr old Barbara Von Woodworth were each charged with 10 counts of animal cruelty," Sughrue said. "Each count of the charges, which are felonies, corresponds to a dog that had to be euthanized after being removed from the residence. Both suspects lived at the Professor Street location. The suspects have been transported to the Wake County Jail."
However, in a positive twist, people flooded to the Wake County Animal Shelter after this story broke. Many of the animals were immediately adopted by families across the Triangle.
"This is one of the busiest Fridays we've ever had," said Angeline McInerny, interim director of the center, told the Raleigh News & Observer. "The lobby was full at noon, so this was pretty exciting for us."
There was even a Craig's List posting about the animals, prompting even more attention to the situation:
51 small breed dogs were brought in to the Wake County Animal Shelter today from a Puppy Mill bust. These dogs are in dire need of Adoption / Foster / Rescue. Please note Rescue groups need to be 501(c)3 and will need to register with the shelter if not already.
If you can help with fostering, rescuing or adopting one of these much in need dogs, please go directly to the shelter. They are open daily 12-6pm. Thank you in advance.
(Please do not respond to this posting, I am sending out this message on behalf of the WCAS)***Breeds available are: Pekinese, Papillon, Chihuahua, Lhasa Apso and Yorkie***
Some of the animals, however, were not available for adoption. The ones placed in protective custody were being nursed back to health by select foster families, as well as other helpers around the area.
