For a player looking to regain the spark he left behind in his better days in Indianapolis, strong safety Bob Sanders has to be shaking his head.
According to The Associated Press, Sanders was placed on the season-ending injured reserve list Wednesday following a knee injury a week ago last Sunday in New England.
Sanders played in only a pair of games with the Chargers this season prior to getting hurt. Coming into the season, he missed the equivalent of four full seasons as a result of injuries.
The Chargers, who acquired the 2007 NFL Defensive Player of the Year in the off-season after the Colts gave him his walking papers, added former Chicago Bears defensive lineman Tommie Harris with Sanders' spot becoming available.
“From the standpoint of where his (Sanders) knee is, it was a decision that was the right one,” San Diego Head Coach Norv Turner remarked to AP. “When you make a decision like this, it’s based on medical facts first and included our feelings and his. I know that it was going to be difficult for him to continue. I’ve had a number of conversations with Bob over the last few days. This is difficult for him. I’m very respectful of what he tried to do for us and I wish his impact would’ve lasted longer."
As for Harris, he played all seven of his NFL seasons with the Bears, reaching the Pro Bowl each year from 2005-07.
San Diego (2-1) hosts Miami (0-3) this Sunday at 1:15 p.m.
