Chargers part company with McMichael, Garay

With today (March 12) being the official start of the free agent frenzy in the NFL, many teams are wheeling and dealing, be it signings and cuts.

The San Diego Chargers announced earlier in the day that they had parted ways with backup tight end Randy McMichael and defensive tackle Antonio Garay.

An 11-year NFL vet, McMichael was with the Chargers for the last three campagins, tallying 59 catches for 543 yards and a pair of touchdowns. In 2012, McMichael had a mere nine catches for 51 yards.

McMichael got his NFL start with the Miami Dolphins, drafted in the fourth round in 2002. He played for the Dolphins and St. Louis Rams prior to joining the Bolts.

Don't be surprised if the Georgia product ends up in a backup role with another club, especially one that needs a blocking tight end come next season.

Meantime, Garay spent the past four years with the Bolts, his best year coming in 2010 when he notched 48 tackles and 5.5 sacks. In eight games last season, Garay tallied 16 tackles and a single sack.

The Boston College product, who was drafted by Cleveland in 2003 (sixth round), also spent time in Chicago.
