Politics are always more partisan than we are willing to admit. It's true for Obama supporters but it's also true for Republicans. When President Clinton was accused of having multiple affairs and cheating on his wife, Republicans said, character counts. Now when it's a Republican like Newt Gingrich who is apparently lacking character, all the Republicans can say is that, the press doesn't scrutinize the Democrats about their character. While it matters that the press may be one sided, it's not a valid answer to any or every wrong doing of Republicans.
Let me first state some important points that Democrats and liberals won't like or agree with. Rush Limbaugh, he's very successful, he's very smart, he's very entertaining, he's generous, he supports charity, and he deserves his wealth, position and acclaim. For those reasons I enjoy listening to Rush. However, Rush Limbaugh, though he is the best at explaining what conservatism is, he often sides with Republicans and defends Republicans for no good reason when they are being less than conservative. Maybe it's because these are his golfing buddies, maybe he just follows the Reagan rule of speak no ill against fellow Republicans. Well, the last several decades of speaking no ill against follow Republicans has lead us to less than conservative leaders who lack character.
The audience at the Republican debate last night cheered when Newt Gingrich got mad that he was asked about his supposed open marriage request of his previous wife. Why did they cheer? Yeah the media may not ask these questions of the Democrats but that doesn't give Gingrich a free pass. Maybe Gingrich is innocent but it's a fair question, if character counts. It's not like there isn't a history of this kind of behavior. Gingrich cheated on his first wife with his second wife and cheated on his second wife with his third wife. Maybe Gingrich is a changed man? I hope so, but when you make life choices like he has, there are consequences.
If Republicans and talk show hosts can say character counts when it's the Democrats, they have to do better than”Why do the Democrats get a pass when they do this stuff? They have to stand up and do what's right or stop pretending they are the party of values.
