According to atheistic and humanist theology, you die and that is it. The wager of nothing taking place at the end of life is a poor one at best since even science declares energy is neither created nor destroyed. What happens to our life energy which can be described as a type of electricity?
But when one considers the catastrophic consequences that await as judgment at the end of days, perhaps it is escapism to hope there is nothing else to consider after death.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/End_time
In Christian eschatology the return of Jesus Christ, or Messiah, will usher in the Tribulation where the anti-Christ consolidates the powers of darkness into a final confrontation between good and evil. The rapture of the church and the removal of the Holy Spirit will preclude those left behind into a cataclysmic series of man-made and supernatural horrors. Well over one third of mankind will be slain.
Islamic eschatology is hardly any better as a messianic Mahdi will establish a world-wide Muslim empire where Jews, Christians, or any non-Muslim will convert or be destroyed. The ultimate goal of Islam is to dominate either by choice or force, a far cry from being a religion of peace.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahdi
Although Buddhism is godless, there still is a bloody reckoning for those on Earth who will ultimately be slaughtered in a “sword interval” where the majority of mankind will perish in a bloody massive war. Unwise behavior that is rampantly practiced will be counterbalanced to a state of harmony after the sword interval and peace will then prevail.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhist_eschatology
Hindu eschatology will have Brahma cycle end after 311 trillion, 40 billion years where the substance of the universe will dissolve into nothingness and begin the rebirth of the universe all over again for another cycle of 311 trillion, 40 billion years. It is unknown how often this reincarnation of existence has taken place or if this is the first cycle.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindu_eschatology
In Jewish eschatology there is a belief of the resurrection of the dead, however judgment is executed every Yon Kippur according to Jewish believers. Since the Jews are the chosen people of God, judgment is more reserved for the Gentiles. There is a Savior of the Jewish nation which is prophesied to be the Messiah according to Ezekiel and other Old Testament prophets. The warning of an Arab coalition of nations rising up in a war against Israel is predicted.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_eschatology
A violent and chaotic conclusion is the destiny of our expanding universe as eventually all matter will rush in for another big bang that will apparently be the result of everything collapsing upon itself untold billions of years in the future. This scientific prognosis follows closely to the Hindu eschatology where the universe will dissolve into one gigantic consolidation of matter which could trigger another big bang and start the expanding universe all over again. http://www.universetoday.com/37105/fate-of-the-universe/
There are other belief systems that involve super alien beings that will return to assess their scientific experiment of seeding or converting genetic material on this planet. The reckoning may mean being transplanted elsewhere for future disposition, or additional interference in our genetic evolution for unknown purposes.
It all comes down to whether one believes in magic either with or without a magician.
