Warner Bros. Pictures has changed the release date of the sci-fi thriller "Jupiter Ascending," starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis. The movie was originally scheduled to arrive in U.S. and Canadian cinemas on July 15, 2014. The new release date is now Feb. 6, 2015. According to an article published by The Hollywood Reporter on June 3, 2014, the reason for the delay was that the movie needed more special-effects work.
The change in release for "Jupiter Ascending" may come as a relief for Kunis, who is pregnant with her first child and would have had to do a grueling worldwide press tour for "Jupiter Ascending" in the last few months of her pregnancy. Kunis and fiancé Ashton Kutcher not publicly announced her due date.
On Dec. 9, 2013, Warner Bros. Pictures premiered the first trailer for the sci-fi movie "Jupiter Ascending." A second official trailer for "Jupiter Ascending" premiered on March 26, 2014:
Here is the description of "Jupiter Ascending" from Warner Bros. Pictures:
"Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis star in 'Jupiter Ascending,' an original science fiction epic adventure from filmmakers Lana and Andy Wachowski. Jupiter Jones (Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people's houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.
"From the streets of Chicago to far flung galaxies whirling through space, "Jupiter Ascending" is written and directed by the Wachowskis. Award-winning producer Grant Hill, with whom they have collaborated since "The Matrix" Trilogy, is producing, together with Lana Wachowski and Andy Wachowski. Roberto Malerba and Bruce Berman serve as executive producers."
"Jupiter Ascending" is a big gamble for the Wachowskis and Warner Bros. Pictures, since the Wachowski movies released through Warner Bros. after "The Matrix" trilogy have been huge bombs: 2008's "Speed Racer" and 2012's "Cloud Atlas."
Reactions to the "Jupiter Ascending" trailer have been mixed. Most of the negative reactions have to do with the casting of Tatum, either because people think he doesn't have enough acting credibility for this type of movie or because they think he looks slightly ridiculous with the blonde hairstyle and eyeliner he wears in the movie.
"Jupiter Ascending" is also a big gamble for Tatum. After having a winning streak of starring in blockbusters in 2012 ("21 Jump Street," "The Vow" and "Magic Mike"), he hit a stumbling block in 2013 with the critically panned flop "White House Down." Tatum is likely to have a hit in 2014 with "22 Jump Street" (the sequel to "21 Jump Street"), but "Jupiter Ascending" is more of a question mark.
Here is a sampling of Internet comments:
"A beautiful, woman (a damsel, even) is kidnapped (I'd say she's in distress) and we watch as she travels alongside her savior as he goes on wild and daring adventures to fight The Cause. But hey, she's a bit sassy, so that means she's not completely helpless! What an incredibly unique story."
"Yes yes yes, the wachowskis did it again! can’t wait till summer!!!"
"So glad the Wachowski's make movies. They bring a refreshing originality that is fading in movies. Between them and others like Guillermo Del Toro, I hope they inspire a new generation of truly visionary movie makers."
It's a Wachowski film, it's gonna be good. Every movie they have made has been top notch. I even read one of their scripts that never made it into production called Carnivore. F'n brilliant. I wish they would actually produce it. Everything they do is golden. Can't wait for this."
"And they're *still* recycling the same old Matrix effects that were already beaten to death more than a decade ago."
"I'd see this! Looks enjoyable to me."
"Jupiter Ascending... Advent Rising- they took a page out of Orson Scott Card's book (almost literally...) That being said, seeing as Card didn't make an awesome movie with his idea, i'm glad the Wachowski siblings did."
"WOW!!!! Speachless.... I cannot wait for it to be released. I got to watch."
"I will watch it since I watched the Matrix trilogy and I loved them and because Cloud Atlas challenged my mind. However I didn't see anything new in the trailer."
"Looks good. Lets just hope it can surprise us and not turn into one of those typical Twilight, Beautiful Creatures, Mortal Instruments, The Host, Abduction etc, or as I like to call it: the blockbuster movie geared towards teenage girls. I only pray that this movie will be more akin to the Matrix or other Sci-fi films."
"Jupiter Ascending from the Wachowski's eh? With Sean Bean! Fine @ss Mila Kunis! and Channing Ta...wha??? aw hell...Let's see..a love story you can see coming a mile away, visuals and action seem ok but not impressive so far, and the same "the world hates me" dialogue from Lana Wachowski. I can tell with the 'some lives will always matter more than others' line. She really needs to stop because she gave us overkill when the dialogue and screenplay for Cloud Atlas was full of this. IMO Andy should go solo, but he aint leaving his sister. Period. First Speed Racer, then Cloud Atlas, and possibly Jupiter Ascending. Hey you know what they say, 'death come in 3's'."
"If nothing else, Andy and Lana have a killer sense of style. Plus I love the central conceit of Earth as an underdeveloped world unaware of the interplanetary society around it."
"Made by the people from the matrix? this better be good because channing tatum can't act worth sh*t. he's only good to look at. and if he is the reason the movie is bad. then, ya you get it."
"The ship that Channing Tatum flies looks like the thing from the Halo 5 trailer."
"The mech suit they use in the movie looks like the from Infinite Stratos anime series."
"Hmm... From the trailer alone, I'm getting a Matrix meets 5th Element vibe. Yeah, I'll check that out..."
"Hmm, looks interesting, but I'm not getting my hopes up yet."
