ESPN telecasts of the 2013 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series will feature a new anchor and a new approach beginning with the 53rd annual O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals presented by Super Start Batteries at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, February 14th through 17th.
Long-time ESPN pit reporter Dave Rieff gets the call as anchor announcer for the 2013 season; he will also continue his lead role on the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series telecasts. Joining Rieff in the booth will be former NHRA racer Mike Dunn, entering his 12th season as a color analyst on the broadcasts.
Also part of the broadcast crew: Gary Gerould, who returns as a pit reporter at all 24 events, and John Kernan and Jamie Howe, who will split pit reporter and trackside duties.
ESPN will dedicate more than 110 hours of original programming to the 2013 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series on a same-day basis. NHRA and ESPN will experiment with live coverage of qualifying and finals, with the first live racing action coming at the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA SpringNationals from Royal Purple Raceway in Houston, April 27th and 28th. The final session of qualifying will air live on Saturday, April 27th from 3 to 5 p.m. ET; ESPN will also telecast live on Sunday, April 28th, joining the event during with the semifinals in the professional categories beginning at 2 p.m. ET.
