Peter Philips is currently the Global Creative Director for Chanel Makeup, a position described by Vogue magazine as the "most coveted job in cosmetics". Philips, a Belgian makeup artist took a break from trend forecasting and creating the next must-have Chanel lip gloss to create an animated short to show the animation of a makeup kit.
A robot propelled in the air by a Chanel lipstick jet-pack, a fashionista being photographed whose skirt is made of blush brushes, and a black Chanel spider are not the likeliest of spokesmodels for the French luxury brand. The Chanel short was inspired by an editorial Philips recently created for Paris Vogue using headdresses crafted from Chanel packaging.
Philips came to the task of animation with the required technical skills, having studied graphic design and attending Antwerp's Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts. The creativity ended when Philips did concede on one creative point regarding the music used in the short, “If it were up to me it would have been disco,” he states.
Since taking over the cosmetics end of Chanel, Philips has always been on top of this game. From the limited-edition nail varnish Jade, which at its height in 2009 went for $100 a bottle on Ebay to his temporary tattoo project for Karl Lagerfeld for Spring 2010 runway show (which had a waiting list of almost 3600 names before the designs went on sale), Peter Philips is definitely setting fashion trends...not following.
