A weak trough of low pressure will pass through the region during the daytime hours today, bringing the threat of an afternoon shower to portions of the area. The approach and passage of the system will swing the winds around to the southwest, mitigating the lake effect activity that has been ongoing off the lee of lake’s Erie and Ontario. Behind the system, however, winds will shift back around to the west and northwest, and with a fresh supply of cooler, Canadian air filtering over the Lakes once again, the lake effect machine is expected to kick into gear.
The growing season nearly came to end this morning across the Capital Region, as Albany’s low temperature flirted with the freezing mark. The same thing is expected to occur once again this evening, as skies clear behind the departing system, and temperatures take a nose dive into the 30’s. It does look as if most places in the immediate Capital Region that did not see an end to the growing season this morning will see such an event occur tomorrow morning, as temperatures may end up a few degrees cooler than those experienced this morning.
The next several days will feature partly to mostly sunny skies during the day, and mostly clear skies at night. Lake effect clouds and showers should, for the most part, be confined to areas north and west of the Capital Region. Some of the cloud cover may travel down the Mohawk Valley and into the Capital Region, however, early season lake effect precipitation events do usually tend to remain closer to the lee of the lakes. It will be breezy and chilly during the daytime hours into the weekend, with temperatures remaining below normal.
Another weak system approaches the region for the second half of the weekend, bringing a chance for showers to the area, before temperatures begin to slowly moderate into the new work week.
