Ottawa's Patrick Chan has not had the dominant season as he has had in years past, but seems to be turning the corner less than a year away from the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.
According to the Canadian Press, on Wednesday night at the World Figure Skating Championships in London, Ontario, Chan set a world record score in the short program by posting 98.37 points.
Chan successfully executed a quadruple toe loop followed by a triple Axel. Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan had the old world record score for the short program of 95.32 points which he set at an International Skating Union grand prix event in Sendai, Japan in November.
Chan, who went undefeated last year, had struggled a little in the 2012-13 season as he was unable to defend his Skate Canada and Grand Prix Final championships.
Three weeks ago he changed his training site from Colorado to Detroit, and it appears he is comfortable being closer to his birthplace.
Chan is also with a new coach this year. Kathy Johnson, whose background is more in modern dance, has replaced Christy Krall, who resigned at the end of last year's figure skating season.
The long program is Friday with Chan leading Denis Ten of Kazakhstan by 6.81 points.
