Champion of Stray Souls is one of the newest "Born of the Gods" cards spoiled today Jan 15, 2014 in an article by Mike Cannon on DailyMtg.com. This mythic rare "Magic: The Gathering" creature card can have a huge impact on the battlefield.
Champion of Stray Souls - 4BB
Creature - Skeleton Warrior (Mythic Rare)
3BB, Tap, Sacrifice X other creatures: Return X target creature cards from your graveyard to the battlefield.
5BB: Put Champion of Stray Souls on top of your library from your graveyard.
The more fodder you have to sacrifice with Champion of Stray Souls, the more powerful it is. Creatures with "enters the battlefield" or "dies" triggered abilities are some of the best candidates to employ, however you'll first need a way to stockpile your graveyard with creatures. In Standard you'll be able to mill yourself with Balustrade Spy, Deadbridge Chant, Drown in Filth, Grisly Salvage, Rot Farm Skeleton, Jace, Memory Adept, Breaking, or Chronic Flooding. If Champion of Stray Souls gets milled in the process you'll be able to put it on top of your library with its second activated ability. Going green looks like a great option, allowing you to abuse Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord and Korozda Guildmage.
Cannon points out that a simple way to abuse Champion of Stray Souls is with creatures that produce creature tokens when they enter the battlefield like Abhorrent Overlord. This will allow you to gain value by sacrificing the tokens to recur your giant threats such as Lord of the Void while still attacking with the bombs you originally brought back to life. Because you'll have so many creatures in your graveyard Shadowborn Demon and Whip of Erebos are two other great "Magic: The Gathering" cards to consider.
Aside from its intensive activation costs, the main drawback of Champion of Stray Souls is that it can't be one of the creatures you sacrifice to reanimate a threat from your graveyard. It's in commander decks where Champion of Stray Souls will shine.
How will you use Champion of Stray Souls?
