Champaign city council will not give approval for new recycling center

The Champaign city council deferred granting an operating permit to a new recycling company, Green Purpose LLC, during the April 5, 2011 council meeting.

The discussion has been tabled, and is expected to be a topic for discussion in up coming meetings. At issue is the council's lack of information regarding the new recycling center, which is slated to be located at 807 Pioneer Street, near where the old recycling center used to operate. It ceased operation in 2010.

According to the Champaign News Gazette, Deborah Frank Feinman said city council members still have questions about the recycling center, and they decided it would be best to forward the issue to a discussion session.

From the recycling compay itself, the company's CEO, Steve Rosenberg was quoted from the same source saying, "I was very surprised by the council's deferral on Monday night, considering how excited the zoning board was" regarding the proposal.

The recycling center was slated to open April 22, but how this decision will affect the timeline is currently unknown.

The lack of a community recycling center in Champaign has been a topic of local message boards, with several disgruntled resident complaints posted there.
