Champ is the Loch Ness Monster of the United States

Champ is the name given to a reputed lake monster living in Lake Champlain. While most authorities regard Champ as legend, some believe it is possible such a giant creature does live deep in the lake. When people think of lake monsters, many talk about the creature that lives in Loch Ness, Scotland, which is affectionately called "Nessie", the Loch Ness Monster. However, the lore of lake monsters also exists in the United States. According to legend and eye witness accounts, such a monster dwells in Lake Champlain, a 125 mile long body of fresh water that is shared by New York and Vermont and juts a few miles into Quebec, Canada .The state governments of Vermont and New York have put Champ on their Endangered Species List, so that if such an animal does exist, it would be protected by law.

The best known eye witness account and photograph of Champ was by Sandra Mansi. Mansi's adventure began on July 5, 1977, as she, her husband to be, and her two children were picnicking along the Vermont side of Lake Champlain, north of St.Albans. They decided to get a closer look at the lake. As her children were playing in water she sat and watch them from the shore. All of a sudden she saw a disturbance out in the lake. She was amaze to see a grayish-brown head and a long snakelike neck of a creature breaking the lake's surface. Though frightened, she rushed to get her Kodak Instamatic camera from her car, and snapped one shot of the creature. Once the photograph was taken, she grabbed her children and fled the scene. The photograph was later subjected to computer tests by B.Roy Frieden, professor of optical sciences at the University of Arizona. There was no evidence of a montage or superimposition of the photograph. The creature in the picture was proven real.

This photograph of Champ has been published by Time and other magazines. Champ has been featured on NBC TV's , Unsolved Mysteries and Fox Network, Sightings, as well as Japanese television and The Today Show.
