U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga) visited the Camp Phoenix in Afghanistan to meet with Georgia Guardsmen in the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team from Macon, according to Tuesday's press release from Chambliss' office.

"We are here … to look you in the eye with your boots on the ground, appreciate what a great job you are doing, how much we know you have sacrificed and your families have sacrificed, to protect America and protect Americans," said Chambliss, vice chairman of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and ranking member of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee. "I am very proud of every one of you for your commitment to freedom.”

The Georgia senator toured the camp sometime last week, and was briefed on the military situation in the region.

The 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, or "Macon Volunteers," is part of the Georgia Army National Guard, and is one of the oldest Army units in history.
