Let us make a small chamber on the [housetop] and put there for him a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp. Then whenever he comes to us, he can go [up the outside stairs and rest] here. (2 Kings 4:10 AMP)
A woman and her husband both from Shunem wanted to welcome Elisha into their house. The man of God was loved by them and he came through town quite often. The husband asked his wife what was needed and he would build it for her. She said he needs a bed, a table, a chair and a lamp, and they can go on the roof in a chamber.
This is a picture of how Jesus lives within our heart. It's important we talk with him quite often. We begin to love Him that way. Then we want to make Him comfortable in our hearts. So a bed is for Him to stay night and day with us. And a table and chair to teach us how to study His word which is the lamp unto our feet.
Elisha wanted to reward the Shunemmite woman with something that would make her happy. But there was nothing she would ask for. Elisha's servant told him she might want a son since she had no children. Elisha told her God would give her a baby. She said, "Please don't tell me if it's not going to happen." He said, "it will be as i told you." She wanted a child and didn't want him to be mistaken, and she therefore disappointed in a way that would break her heart.
She got her son. But this is not a free ticket to us to ask for our heart's desire and be sure we will receive it. God may grant it or we may receive something we would never ask for or want for that matter but it ends up being a gift. God uses the strangest things to draw us near and help us to know His word.
