Challenge your palate with 'The Climber'

If you are looking for a wine off the beaten path, “The Climber” is an excellent and adventurous choice.

Clif Family Winery in Saint Helena recently released its 2010 Limited Release Napa Valley Red Wine Blend ($28) from five vineyards throughout the Valley. This is a heady blend of 63 percent merlot and 37 percent cabernet sauvignon.

“Our love of wine is linked to a love of adventure,” said co-owner Gary Erickson. “The journey toward becoming vintners began years ago in Europe, where a long day of cycling ended with a leisurely meal and a great bottle of wine. Today, we seek to recreate those inspiring moments with our wines. We hope you enjoy the ride.”

As a climber continues to challenge his or her ability, this structured wine exudes the same confidence and escalating experience.

The purple red color in the glass is the opening act and the promise of more delicious excitement to follow. The blend opens with aromas of fresh cranberry and hints of vanilla. The flavors reveal bright flavors of strawberry and pomegranate with subtle notes of clove and brown spices.

This is not a pretentious wine but one that is at ease with a family dinner, after a pick-up game on Sunday afternoon or a romantic smoked ham quiche dinner by the fire.
