This series of eight articles describes meditation techniques to strengthen and balance each of the major energy centers of the body. Each article has a brief introduction followed by self-help techniques for a particular chakra. The introduction is the same for each article so important information is not omitted. Remember that change is a process that requires daily commitment, focus and patience to create remarkable changes.
Introduction to the Chakras
The human body is composed of energy centers called chakras. The chakras direct and distribute energy throughout our bodies to our organs, muscles, nerves and other tissues. Together, the chakras make up our aura, the electromagnetic field that surrounds our body.
The aura is an energetic reflection of our essence—the sum total of our thoughts and beliefs. Each chakra vibrates at a different frequency and is associated with a different color. When each chakra spins at its perfect frequency, the body is healthier and we are more centered and balanced.
However, the frequency of the chakras can be affected by lifestyle factors (such as diet, sleep, etc.) and negative thought habits. Chakras can fall out of perfect frequency, leading to illness. Color can be used to balance any chakra that is affected by lifestyle factors or negative thoughts.
Root chakra – associated color, red
Located at the genitals in the center of the body and the base of the spine, this chakra is the gateway of birth and the reproductive organs. It links the physical body to the earth. The color of the root chakra is red. Red is a dynamic, passionate color that stimulates you on an emotional level and gives you energy.
Two of the qualities associated with the root chakra are passion and purpose. People who have strong root chakras have drive, passion, and purpose. They set goals for their life. They make plans. They have things they want to accomplish, and they tend not to be as happy as they could be unless they are making progress in achieving their goals.
Their passion makes people with strong root chakras dynamic, interesting people with strong energy that is stimulating to be around. They usually are passionate lovers.
A strong root chakra also leads to high energy, the capacity to withstand physical drains on the body and the capacity to recuperate quickly from physically draining experiences such as over-work, accidents, illnesses and surgeries. People with strong root chakras tend to value physical fitness and health. They may not be in perfect health, but they have a sense of priority about their physical condition.
The root chakra influences our sense of self-preservation and self-protection. Individuals with strong root chakras take action to maintain their physical lives and their sense of self. A strong root chakra influences you to protect and defend yourself from physical dangers, and also from psychological and emotional dangers. People with strong root chakras aren’t easy to boss around! They stand up for themselves when confronted or threatened. They have opinions and a sense that their view of life matters. They have things they want to accomplish and they don’t take kindly to other people getting in their way!
It’s important to keep in mind that the other major energy centers influence us as well. For example, in most of us, it is because of the influence of the third (yellow) and fourth (green) chakras that we do not say rude things to people when they are rude to us. We defend ourselves in appropriate ways—in ways that make us feel proud of ourselves (most of the time, anyway!). But without the influence of the root chakra, we wouldn’t stick up for ourselves at all!
Some conditions that root chakra meditation may positively influence
- Increased sense of self-empowerment
- Greater physical health and longevity
- Increased sense of purpose in life
- Increased interest in life
- In preparation for physically or emotionally draining experiences (e.g., surgery)
- Recovery after the fact from physically or emotionally draining experiences
- Before changing life circumstances (e.g., moving, new job, marriage)
Root chakra meditation
Lie down or sit comfortably. Your spine should be straight and in alignment. Close your eyes and breathe in a relaxed fashion. Many people breathe deeply because it is more relaxing and at the same time, more energizing. Belly breathing is great. Imagine that you are expanding your diaphragm downward (toward your feet) as you breathe. This allows the lungs to more fully expand. If you try to breathe deeply and do not allow the air to flow into the lower part of your lungs, your ribcage will keep your lungs from expanding to maximum capacity and your breaths will be more shallow.
Image a stream of red energy coming from the ground (Mother Earth) and entering your root chakra. Welcome the energy as the source of your life. Allow the energy to collect in your root chakra until you can feel a strong, pleasant vibration.
Direct your attention to this feeling of energy, and if possible, visualize the color red filling the lower six to eight inches of your pelvis. Focus on the energy and the color for as long as you can. Start with a couple of minutes, and set a goal to focus for longer as your meditation skills improve. If your mind drifts, just gently notice and return to concentrating on the pleasant vibration and the color red.
Red is a very powerful color, so be careful not to overdo it. Start with two to three minutes or even less in the beginning, and increase the time slowly. Only you know how much time you will need on any particular day, so be flexible and key into your intuition and the signs coming to you from your physical body. If you begin to feel tired or lacking in interest, you should cut back on the length of time you are spending in this meditation.
Optional add-on for a meditation focusing on any chakra
Energy moves from the root chakra up through the spine through each chakra to the crown chakra on the top of the head. When the targeted chakra is vibrating strongly and you begin to key into the increase in energy of the chakra above the one you are focusing on, shift your attention to the next chakra and continue your meditation as you focus on this next chakra’s color and personal qualities until you have energized all of your chakras.
Root chakra affirmations
As you become more skillful at feeling the energy in a chakra and visualizing the associated color, feel free to add affirmations into your meditation.
The root chakra gives us strength, passion, protection, direction and energy. If your desire is to improve your life in any way that draws upon these qualities, use your intuition to develop appropriate affirmations that you can repeat either out loud or silently in your head as you focus on the red energy filling your root chakra. Here are some examples:
- I’m strong and powerful and determine my own life.
- I protect myself and live in harmony with everyone.
- I accomplish all the goals I set for myself because I am strong and never quit.
- You can also develop affirmations about your personal, specific goals. For example: I weigh my perfect weight of 120 pounds and have perfect health.
Disclaimer: You should use your intuition to determine when a particular meditation is appropriate for you. Seek the advice of a trained professional if you are using meditations to treat physical illness. More successful results for any type of desired change are generally obtained by using a multi-faceted approach which may include meditation, diet, lifestyle, spiritual practice, exercise, and consultation with health care professionals, when appropriate.
