A father is in jail for chaining his 6-year-old son to a metal bed frame while he went off to work for the day. Police found the boy shackled on a chain that was just long enough to reach the bathroom facilities, according to ABC News on June 11.
Apparently the man left his son with some water and snacks nearby in case he got hungry or thirsty while alone and chained in his room for the day. Police believe that this practice of chaining his son inside the house started about 10 days ago at the close of school for the summer.
Police also believe that if they weren't made aware of what was going on with this child, the small boy would have spent his entire summer vacation on a chain while his father worked. The father's girlfriend also lives at the house and police are investigating if she was aware of what was happening with the child.
The Huffington Post reports that the police believe that this Logan City father did not have any other children living in the home, just this six-year-old boy. The police received an anonymous tip about the boy home alone and chained to the metal bed frame.
Law enforcement officers went to the house about 11 a.m. on Tuesday once getting that tip. The boy appeared in good health, but was being evaluated, reports Logan City Police Chief Gary Jensen.
It sounds like in lieu of a babysitter the father rigged the room up with everything he thought his son would need while he was gone to work. He had food and water available and the chain measured just long enough for the little guy to get to the toilet and sink. He forgot about the human aspect of someone being there for the boy in case he got hurt, scared or a possible house fire.
The unnamed 28-year-old father was arrested and charged with four counts of child abuse and booked into Cache County Jail. The little boy has been placed in the care of Child Protective Services.
