In the main event of UFC Fight Night 26, former middleweight title challenger Chael Sonnen returned to the winner's circle with an impressive submission victory over former light heavyweight champion Mauricio Rua. Sonnen came into the fight looking to get a win following back to back losses to Anderson Silva and Jon Jones. Rua was also looking to rebound following a loss to Alexander Gustafsson.
The recently married Sonnen was able to score a submission victory over Rua when he locked in a guillotine choke in the closing moments of round one. Rua was forced to tap at the 4:47 mark of the first round.
Rua was never able to get going. Sonnen did a tremendous job of controlling the fight no matter where it went. Sonnen controlled Rua on the ground and against the cage. This fight was classic Chael Sonnen and it was a look back to the style that put Sonnen in title fights.
Following the impressive win, Sonnen left the Boston crowd with some polarizing words.
"Right here on the UFC's new home, FOX Sports 1, Wanderlei Silva, 6-feet tall and 205 pounds," Sonnen said in his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan. "Boy until I met you, I didn't know they could stack crap that high."
Sonnen went on to lay down a challenge to Wanderlei Silva. Silva and Sonnen have been at odds for several years but have yet to meet in the cage.
This was a very tough loss for Rua who is fighting to stay in the top 10 at 205 pounds. Rua has went 2-4 in his last six fights and was in dire need of an impressive win. The loss will be a setback that could cause him to drop out of the top 10 in the light heavyweight division for the first time since he joined the UFC.
With a win and a two fight skid now behind him, Sonnen can now focus on either moving back down to middleweight or finally making the Wanderlei Silva fight happen.
UFC Fight Night 26 aired Saturday night live on the new Fox Sports 1 at the TD Gardens in Boston.
