Chadwick Boseman becomes soul legend James Brown in trailer for ‘Get on Up’

Actor Chadwick Boseman transforms into “The Godfather of Soul” in the trailer for the upcoming James Brown biopic “Get on Up”. Universal released the trailer on Thursday which shows Brown being abandoned by his mom as a young child and eventually skyrocketing to music stardom. “Get on Up” is scheduled to premiere in theaters this summer.

Actress Viola Davis plays the soul icon’s mom in the film which also stars Octava Spencer, Lennie James, Craig Robinson, Dan Aykroyd, Jill Scott, Tika Sumpter, Keith Robinson and Ralph Tresvant. The movie is directed by Tate Taylor with Brian Grazer and legendary musician Mick Jagger serving as producers. It was filmed in the neighboring state of Mississippi.

Brown who died in 2006 at the age of 73 is the latest music icon to get the biopic treatment. Tina Turner (“What’s Love Got to Do with It”), Little Richard, The Temptations, Ray Charles ("Ray"), Natalie Cole (“Livin’ for Love: The Natalie Cole Story”) and Billie Holiday (“Lady Sings the Blues”) are among several musicians to have films made about their lives.
