*UPDATE* Chad Johnson has been cut by the Miami Dolphins. (Source)
Football season has officially started with the Carolina Panthers and several other teams taking the field in preseason games. With the beginning of football season come the headlines that have absolutely nothing to do with football each season. You will read about off the field conflicts, and salacious escapades.
Typically, when athletes find themselves in sticky situations, the public presumes them guilty until proven innocent. That may not be the case with Chad Johnson of the Miami Dolphins. Johnson was arrested for domestic assault against his new wife, Evelyn Lozada last night. Allegedly, Lozada confronted him after finding a receipt for condoms in his car. (Source)
Most people who have discovered the story turn the eye of suspicion toward Lozada, and not Johnson.
He married an extremely combative woman. Knowing her history of swinging out on people on camera, it was just a matter of time. -C. June
He married a jump-off who likes to fight. This is why you judge a woman on her past. You shouldn't put your hands on a woman, but I'll bet my salary she was swinging on him. He's simple for marrying that silly trick. Jump-offs don't make wives. - D. Howard
In the past it has been difficult to convince anyone that women are perpetrators of domestic abuse as often as men. During a radio program on Charlotte's Power 98 FM, last October, a representative from CMPD insisted that the statistics they receive show that women are more often the victims. However, as you will read in this article, "Domestic Violence: Women Abusers", you will learn that National Health Institute statistics paint a very different story.
As Mr. Howard commented above, Evelyn Lozada has a history of violent outbursts that have been documented via her reality show on VH1, Basketball Wives. She has thrown wine bottles, dishes, and punches, as well as leaped on tables to attack other cast mates. Johnson has never been in any trouble related to violence. His showboating and on the field antics have got him in trouble a time or two, however.
Often people excuse violent outbursts if they can empathize with the attacker's reasoning. In this situation, Lozada probably suspected infidelity on the part of Johnson. People further speculate that she was the aggressor, as she had been in the past. Even if you may understand why someone would want to lash out, that does not excuse the behavior. Violence in any relationship, no matter the perpetrator, is dangerous and unnecessary.
According to TMZ, Lozada spent several hours at the hospital due to lacerations to her forehead, apparently the result of being head butted by Johnson. No one really knows what occurred between the two, who were just married in St. Martin last month. People are placing bets on the longevity of the pair's marriage, some wagering that the brevity will rival that of Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries.
The couple's reality show, "Ev and Ocho", is set to premiere on VH1 September 3, 2012.
