Château d'Amboise: Beautiful castle in Loire Valley

First built in the 11th century, Château d'Amboise is a great option for a historic tour of Loire Valley. Used as a fort in the Gallo-Roman times, Charles VII seized the castle in 1434 and Charles VIII rebuilt it in 1492 in a late Gothic flamboyant style. Charles VIII died in the castle he rebuilt, after hitting his head against a low door lintel.

Much of the castle was demolished during the French revolution. However, the castle is still worth a visit, to wander through the rooms and witness the various styles implemented by the kings who called the castle home.

Many visit Château d'Amboise to view the presumed tomb of Leonardo da Vinci, located at the chapel of St. Hubert, which is on the property belonging to Château d'Amboise. Da Vinci died in Amboise in 1519. The St. Hubert chapel is beautiful, built in the flamboyant style.

Climb the stairs to the top of the castle to witness a beautiful view of the city of Amboise.

You can visit the castle for €10 a person. If you would like an audio guide, they can be purchased for €3.50.
