Chia pets, for better or worse, are a part of the American pop culture fabric. From pets to people to Simpsons characters, there has never been a shortage of chia pet variations to satisfy personal tastes.

However, in recent years, the chia seed has become more than a source of amusement. That little seed is a health food powerhouse, bursting with nutritional benefits and surprisingly easy to incorporate into your daily food intake.

Historically, chia seeds were used as running fuel for ancient Mayans and Aztec warriors during battle. If they could power an ancient warrior through a bloody war, imagine what they could do for your energy levels throughout the day and during your more intense workouts!

Chia seeds come from a desert plant commonly found in Mexico and are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, copper, iron, molybdenum, niacin, and zinc. Additionally, when placed in water, chia seeds form a gel that takes much longer to break down. Most people believe a similar gel formation happens in the stomach, making the breakdown of the carbohydrates and conversion to sugar a much slower process. In simple terms, that slow conversion means longer lasting, more sustainable energy!

Chia seeds have a nut-like flavor and are quite easy to add into the foods you're already eating. The easiest method is to sprinkle them on top of oatmeal, cereal, yogurt, and even salads. Additionally, you may want to grind the chia seeds and use them in place of flour in baking. Talk about some guiltless muffins and cookies! You may eat them dry or soak them in water before ingesting.
