The Spokane Extension Service is presenting a Basic Beekeeping Class. On February 16, 2013, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. a class that covers beekeeping equipment, starting a hive, the lives of the bees, what kinds of flowers they need to gather nectar from, managing them in all seasons, swarming, honey production, diseases and pests including mites, and the products you get from the bees. If the class overfills, another class will be held on February 23, 2013. The course also includes field day classes on April 20, May 18, June 22 and August 3 so that students can see and work with the hives in several seasons.
Those who successfully complete the class will receive an IEBA certificate of completion and a one year free membership to the IEBA (Inland Empire Beekeepers Association). Students may also elect to take and pass all the tests of the Washington State Apprentice Beekeeper program will become Washington State Certified Beekeepers and will receive a certificate, which is needed in some cities (including Spokane) and counties to be allowed to keep bees.
The class is open to anyone interested in beekeeping, from novice to those already involved; there is no age limit for the class but small children are discouraged. Class cost includes a WSBA Apprentice booklet and the Basic Beekeeping Syllabus; cost is $50 per person but because 80% of the class time will be held outside on the field days, working with the bees, you will be required to have a bee suit before the first field day. Cost of a bee suit, tools and equipment to start one hive is approximately $550.00. Classes will be taught by experienced Inland Empire Keeper Association members and special instructors.
