No matter how pitifully a dog begs, there are certain foods humans eat that can be very dangerous for dogs to eat. Some of these foods can even be fatal.
One food that should not be given to a dog under any circumstances is avocado. Avocado contains a toxic substance called persin. Persin is present in avocado leaves, bark, the seed, and the avocado fruit itself. Although there are conflicting views concerning the severity of avocado poisoning in dogs, it is best to err on the side of caution since avocado has been known to cause organ damage in smaller animals.
Another substance that is highly toxic to dogs is alcoholic beverages and foods that have alcohol in them. Alcohol not only causes irreparable damage to a dog’s liver, brain, and other organs; alcohol also damages the central nervous system. It only takes a very small amount of alcohol to cause symptoms that range from vomiting to shortness of breath. In some instances, alcohol consumed by a dog can cause the dog to die from the effects of alcohol. The smaller the dog, the worse the symptoms will be.
Some other toxic foods dogs should not be given include garlic, onions, coffee and other caffeinated beverages and foods, grapes, raisins, dairy products, milk, macadamia nuts, candy or other substances containing xylitol, chocolate, fat, bones, plums, persimmons, peaches, raw eggs, raw meats, salt or salty foods, sugary or syrupy foods and beverages, dough, human medicines, and cooking ingredients such as baking soda and baking powder.
