Cerrone throws a nice left to the face of Varner

In what has been touted as the grudge match of the year, Donald "Cowboy” Cerrone and Jaime Varner finally got their chance to step in the cage once again to settle their differences. The stage was Bloomfield, CO for WEC 51 on a fight card that impressed MMA fans and was free to watch on Versus. In what was an exciting three round war, Cerrone, who trains with Greg Jackson in Albuquerque, took the match by unanimous decision after all three judges scored the bout 30-27. At the post-fight press conference, it was announced that the match had also won the $10,000 fight of the night bonus.
Flashback to January 2009, WEC 38 with Cerrone and Varner headlining the event for the WEC 155 lightweight championship. After a four round battle, an illegal knee from Cerrone was thrown and Varner couldn't continue the fight. The judges decided to score the bout in favor of Varner and he was crowned WEC Lightweight Champion. Fast forward to September 30, 2010, WEC 51, the hatred between the two fighters has grown to almost disgusting levels and they finally get to step into the cage and try to settle this once and for all.
In the first round, Cerrone came out like a man on a mission and went straight for Varner's head and started breaking him down with leg kicks. At one point Varner lost his mouth piece and when referee Herb Dean stopped the fight to allow him to retrieve it, Cerrone began calling Varner obscene names. In what surprised not only Varner but MMA fans across the board, Cerrone was able to take down the wrestler with ease. The fight continues on for another two rounds, with Cerrone dominating with takedowns, kicks, knees, and plenty of punches. The two men touched gloves at the end of the third round, but quickly began pushing each other when Dean stepped in and broke them up. After three crazy rounds, Cerrone was crowned victorious.
In Cowboy's post fight cage interview, he offered to fight Varner again, but this time in Varner's home state of Arizona for WEC 53 on December 16, 2010. Varner has agreed to the match, but is it not official yet. At the post-fight conference, Cerrone was asked numerous questions regarding his dislike for Jaime Varner. He said that "Just the shear hatred for the guy was enough motivation," for Cerrone to come out fighting the way he did. He also added that "He is a good fighter ...I still don't like the guy." When asked if this fight was as tough as a title fight he answered that "This was bigger than a title fight."
When Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone stepped in the cage he showed everyone a fighter that no one has ever seen. Even Jaime Varner asked him "Who was that guy?!” His wrestling was on point, a weakness that he once had, as well as his ability to pick his shots. He had crazy heart and even crazier motivation to take the match. With a rubber match in the works to "even out the score", both men will be training to prove that they are better then the other. Let's see what happens!
