A ceramic artist highlights the Third Thursday Walkabout at 6 p.m. today in Islamorada and everyone is invited. The Morada Way Arts District features the talents of Samantha Decker-Hoppen, who will demonstrate her pottery throwing techniques from 7-9 p.m. this evening at the Matecumbe Studio. Decker-Hoppen studied ceramics at New Mexico State University, owned a gallery in Taos, and recently taught at the Ceramic League in Miami.
Steps away from the Florida Keys Memorial -- locally known as the Hurricane Monument -- is an arts and cultural district that has just celebrated one year of the Third Thursday Walkabouts. In this area that is considered downtown Islamorada, a cultural district with five art galleries is open every third Thursday for this special monthly walkabout. The atmosphere is lively and friendly as half of Islamorada’s 6,300-person population seems to be out strolling and sharing conviviality at the art-centered party.
The host galleries around mile marker 81.5 oceanside on the Old Road version of the Florida Keys Overseas Highway feature food and drink as well as a variety of art, while musicians fill the air with inspirational tunes. Art experiments such as performance art or showing a classic, black-and-white film against the side of a building that harkens back to just after the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 are a regular feature of the walkabout.
Restaurants such as Kaiyo Grill, Ma’s Fish Camp, Chef Michael’s and the Green Turtle Inn are in the walkabout area ready to provide culinary art. Elegant Cheeca Lodge is also within walking distance.
The Redbone Gallery, Gallery Morada, Pasta Pantaleo Gallery, Matecumbe Studio and Bluewater Potters are open from 6 - 9 p.m. for the walkabout.
Decker-Hoppen is to host $45 pottery workshops this weekend, Feb. 18-19, at Matecumbe Studio. For more information, call 305-879-2710.
