Next month marks the 20th anniversary of the premiere episode of “Friends,” and now you and your friends can hang out in an exact replica of the coffee shop that the “Friends” friends hung out in. On Wednesday, TV Guide revealed that a Central Perk pop-up shop is opening in New York City to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the premiere of the Emmy winning NBC sitcom.
In addition to free cups of joe (Eight O' Clock coffee will be on tap, including a limited-edition Central Perk roast) fans can chat in a replica of the show’s iconic hangout and even sit on the famous orange Central Perk couch that once accommodated Ross (David Schwimmer), Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), Joey (Matt LeBlanc), Monica (Courteney Cox), Chandler (Matthew Perry) and Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow). There will even be a few cameos by actor James Michael Tyler, who played befuddled barista Gunther on the hit series, as well as renditions of Phoebe’s signature song, “Smelly Cat.”
Of course, the upcoming NYC shop won’t be the first Central Perk knockoff. Earlier this month, Metro posted pics of a Central perk replica … in China. The fully functional Beijing café is located in Chaowai Soho shopping center, and it’s a dead ringer for the classic sitcom set. In addition to boasting the very familiar decor, “Friends” reruns play at the shop throughout the day.
If you can’t make it to China in the near future, the U.S. version of the Central perk pop up shop, located at 199 Lafayette Street in Manhattan, will open on Wednesday, Sept. 17 and remain in business through Saturday, Oct. 18.
