This past week, a large group of job hunters gathered in the basement of a church in Somerville, NJ, to hear a talk called "To Your Success."
The group was the Central New Jersey PSG which stands for Professional Service Group, a self-managing job search support group, sponsored by the NJ State Department of Labor and Workforce Development. With several branches around the state, the PSGs are there to help job hunters stay motivated and afloat in a difficult job market.
The speaker was me, Terrence Seamon, alumnus of PSG and veteran job hunter, who has recently self-published his first book, called To Your Success - The Job Seeker's Guide to Success. The book is intended to be a motivational guide for anyone who is "in transition," seeking a job or seeking more meaningful work.
What did the attendees learn from the talk? In a nutshell, they learned several of the "secrets" to success. Actually there is no big secret at all. In recent years, a new science of happiness and success is emerging. And the results are being published via the internet for all to read. For example:
Set very specific goals - Success researcher Dr. Heidi Halvorson says, when setting goals, be very specific. The more tangible the goal, the better. The more specific you are, thwe more likely you will actually attain it!
Get happy - Happiness researcher Dr. Shawn Achor says that our old notions of happiness are outmoded. We used to think that once we succeed we will be happy. The truth is, the equation runs the other way: the happier (i.e., the more positive and optimistic) we are, the more success we will have.
Find your purpose - Energy researcher Tony Schwartz says, Find your purpose. Why are you here? When you find your purpose, then each day's decisions get a lot clearer.
Stay resilient - Today's job search is unlike any we have seen in decades. For one thing, it is taking far longer to find your next job. This means stress, for the job hunter and his family and loved ones. In the face of this stress, the job hunter must take good care of himself and stay resilient in the face of adversity.
These and other key points comprise the formula for success. To learn more, order the book. And consider inviting me to speak to your group or organization. I'd be happy to.
