Both the religious and non-religious will celebrate the anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth this Saturday, February 12 in the Central Florida area.
Several "Evolution Weekends" are planned: Friendship Fellowship Unitarian Universalist church in Rockledge; Congregation Ohev Shalom in Orlando; Trinity United Methodist and the Unitarian Universalist Society of West Volusia both in Deland; and St. Michael Lutheran Church in Wellington are all hosting "Evolution Weekend" this weekend.
Evolution Weekend is for religious or spiritual people attempting to reconcile the weight of scientific evidence for evolution and natural selection with unscientific beliefs in gods, spirits, chakras, positive energy, etc.
The programs are billed as "an opportunity for serious discussion and reflection on the relationship between religion and science...and to show that religion and science are not adversaries. Rather, they look at the natural world from quite different perspectives and ask, and answer, different questions."
Religionists come from the perspective that science and scientific inquiry can't answer the questions they have in a way they desire, and therefore science isn't adequate for them. They like it when it suits them, or they can't deny it; but they need to cling to their philosophizing and woo, because they need answers they like. Nevermind that religion and belief simply make answers up. Making up answers is antithetical to science and they therefore are not reconcilable.
But at least they're celebrating Darwin.
The Humanist Families of Greater Tampa are having a Darwin Day party at Dinosaur World in Plant City on Feb.12.
Broward College, Center for Inquiry of Ft. Lauderdale, and FLASH are sponsoring a Darwin Day celebration in Coconut Creek with a day of science. "The program will include a series of speakers who will focus on the contributions of Darwin's ideas to various aspects of modern science." Included will be a live animal show, science displays, raffles, door prizes, and birthday cake.
Now we're talking!
