Coming back from a one point deficit at halftime, the Sam Houston State Bearkats rallied late in the game to take a 69-63 win over the Central Arkansas Bears in the first round of the Southland Conference men’s basketball tournament at the Leonard J Merrell Center in Katy, Texas.
The Bearkats had two players in double figures; Darius Gatson (19 pts.) and James Thomas (16 pts.).
Thomas also led the team with11 rebounds, followed by Paul Baxter with seven.
SHSU shot 48% from the field and 45% from the free throw line, while pulling down 36 rebounds.
Central Arkansas countered on offense with LaQuentin Miles scoring 19 points and pulling down six rebounds.
DeShone McClure added to the Bears’ scoring with 16 points.
Central Arkansas shot 37% from the field and 78% from the free throw line.
With the win, Sam Houston will face No. 3 Oral Roberts on Thursday, March 14 with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
The Southland Conference tournament will conclude on Saturday, March 16 with the men’s and women’s finals.
