Centerville High School students anxiously await their day to shine during a cook-off scheduled for March 14, 2013 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Brighton Assisted Living located at 6800 Paragon Road.
Brighton Gardens Assisting Living is hosting the first annual The Taste of Sunrise Cook-off and has invited the students of Centerville High School to help showcase the many culinary talents in the area.
“The cook-off will be against the Centerville Culinary students. There will be three teams of three students. Judges will pick the winners,” said Judy Dewalt, activities and volunteer coordinator at Brighton Gardens Assisted Living.
The criteria for the cook-off has been determined by Melisa Arms, dining services coordinator and Mark Mitrovich, Centerville High School Culinary Program Coordinator. Residents that have a background in the restaurant business will serve as the panel of judges.
“This event is to give the culinary students at CHS another venue to show off the skills they have acquired from the culinary program at CHS,” Dewalt said. “We want the students to see that their culinary skills can be used in industries such as assisted living communities, not just restaurants. So, when they move onto the next chapter of their lives, they look outside the box. Their skills could bring such joy to seniors.”
The event also opens up an opportunity for the public to learn and gather information about the living center and experience the home-made and exceptional dishes they offer. It also offers an intergenerational event for the residents to enjoy and allows their expertise to serve a purpose.
Brighton Gardens is part of the Sunrise Senior Living, one of the largest senior living communities in the country, and a recognized leader in providing assisted living and memory care services. Each March, during National Nutrition Month, Sunrise showcases the dining hall.
“I have been to events held at the high school where the culinary department has catered. It gave me the idea of a cook-off and I presented the idea to the Executive Director,” said Dewalt.
Sunrise Signature cook-off menu:
