Swedish furniture giant IKEA is the latest company to be caught up in the European horse meat scandal, but the company says its U.S. products are not involved.
That includes the frozen Swedish meatballs and other foods sold at the IKEA store in Centennial, Colorado. A press statement released by IKEA reads:
All meatballs sold in our IKEA US stores are sourced from a US supplier. When this issue first came to light in Europe, we mapped the sources of the meat in our meatballs. Based on the results of our mapping, we can confirm that the contents of the meatballs follow the IKEA recipe and contain only beef and pork from animals raised in the US and Canada. All beef and pork from the US and Canada must comply with USDA guidelines. Wiener sausages are not sold in IKEA US stores.
On Monday, IKEA pulled its famous Swedish meatballs from the shelves in five European countries after the company says a few tests showed they contained horse meat. More tests revealed the presence of horse meat in sausages and IKEA has stopped selling all of the meat products from its Swedish supplier Famijen Dafgard.
The problems at IKEA come after horse meat was recently discovered in Burger King hamburgers sold in England and Ireland.
