Census Bureau hiring thousands in Chicago/Illinois for 2010 Census

While the US and specifically Chicago and Illinois face the highest unemployment we've seen in twenty-five years, one organization is hiring,  A LOT. The US Census Bureau is ramping up hiring as it gets into full swing to conduct the 2010 Census. According to the Chicago Tribune, the Census is expecting to hire upwards of 60,000 people in Illinois, of which approximately 20,000 will be right here in the Chicago metro area.

One might ask, so what is the Census? What purpose does it serve? It's actually quite critical to the way our government works and how tax revenue is divided up amongst the country and individual states. Every 10 years, the Census Bureau takes a snapshot of our population, determining how many people reside within the nation's borders, who they are, and where they live. The results help determine your representation in government, as well as how $400 billion in federal funds are spent in your community on things like roads, parks, housing, schools, and public safety. The U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting temporary, part-time census takers for the 2010 Census. The positions being filled are mainly to help collect questionnaires that have not been filled out. Workers are usually visiting neighborhoods to help people complete the census form, answer any questions, and conduct brief personal interviews. These short-term jobs offer good pay, flexible hours, paid training, and reimbursement for authorized work-related expenses, such as mileage incurred while conducting census work. The Chicago Tribune reports that the positions pay between $14.25 to $18.25 an hour. According to the official 2010 Census site, most Chicago metro positions pay the maximum of $18.25 an hour.

At a time when many people are searching for job opportunties and doing anything they can to make money, these are excellent  opportunities. Being a census taker is an exceptional opportunity to earn good pay in a temporary, part-time job, and at the same time help your community.
