Fox News reports a story today about an Iraq war veteran that had her 7-foot SpongeBob Squarepants headstone removed. Family members erected the large headstone to honor veteran Kimberly Walker, 28, with her favorite cartoon character.
Although Spring Grove Cemetery originally authorized the headstone, cemetery staff later decided it had to be removed. On the headstone, SpongeBob wore an Army uniform with Walker’s name and rank.
Cemetery President Gary Freytag says the grave stone was inappropriate for the historic cemetery and the employee who authorized the headstone made a judgment error.
Corporal Walker served two tours in Iraq as a petroleum specialist. Her boyfriend, a fellow soldier, has since been charged for beating and strangling her to death in a Colorado hotel room.
The article says that Walker’s family is distraught over the headstone removal. Walker’s twin sister, Kara Walker, said her sister had loved SpongeBob enough to decorate her bedroom in a SpongeBob theme.
