Cell Phones: contract vs. pay as you go

It is almost impossible to live a normal life without a cell phone. It's not the same as when one could find a payphone on the street corner. No kidding, look around! Pay phones are relics of the past and if you don't have your own phone, you won't be making any phone calls (or checking your email or surfing the web or getting directions, finding reviews of your favorite restaurant...) You get the idea, cell phones have become a basic need for most people.

In the world of smart phones, it has become normal for a person to pay more than $100 per month for just one phone. Once you add the regular monthly plan, the extra fee charged for using the internet on a smart phone, tax, insurance and any other extras and the fees mount up quick.

It is common to give in to these high costs in order to receive the phone of your choice at a reduced rate, sometimes free. Is it worth it though?

There are many pay as you go options and the phones aren't really all that bad. Cricket has a phone on the market right now for $99. It is an android powered HTC Desire C smart phone. It looks like a smaller version of the HTC Evo and it functions the same. Considering the phone costs under $100 out the door with no contracts to fulfill, it's a steal. The phone plan that goes with it has unlimited minutes, texts, and internet for only $50 per month. There isn't a contract plan on the market that beats that, even if combined into a family plan. Plus, you can cancel at any time.
