Cell phone theft leads officers to large drug bust that lands 7 in jail

Police investigating a cell phone theft uncovered a drug operation that resulted in seven arrests Tuesday morning.

About 3 a.m., Marietta police responded to the Marietta Hotel on Northwest Parkway where a man told them someone stole his iPhone.

Officers used the phone’s tracking application, which led them to a building at the Autumn View Apartments at 1035 Franklin Road, police spokesman Mr. David Baldwin said.

“Officers smelled a very strong odor of suspected marijuana emanating from the suspect apartment,” Mr. Baldwin said.

They knocked and announced themselves to the occupants of the apartment.

“While officers were talking to a subject through the door of the apartment, a suspect attempted to flee the apartment by jumping off the second story balcony,” he said. “The suspect was immediately taken into custody by other officers and the stolen iPhone was recovered from his possession.”

Officers obtained a search warrant for the apartment and detained several people who were inside.

During the search, officers found 1,100 grams of suspected marijuana, five handguns, three of which were stolen from various locations, and an assault rifle, Mr. Baldwin said. They also found 42 tablets of Oxycodone and a digital scale, he said.

Police charged the following suspects: Mr. Afton Leak, 22, and Mr. Brandon A. King, 20, both of Marietta, with numerous theft, weapon and narcotic crimes, Mr. Baldwin said.

Ms. Shaquala K. Dennis, 20, of Marietta; Mr. Christian Moore, 22, of Atlanta; Ms. Jasmyne J. Pleasant, 20, of Acworth; Mr. Qunitavious Cullins, 22, of Atlanta, and Mr. Tatravious D. Nelson, 31, of Marietta, have all been charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana, he said.
