Cell Phone Radiation

Here is a quick summary:  On the subject of the health effects of cell phone radiation; we are told that there is nothing to worry about.
 

Here is the long version:

Cell phones signals are a type of radiation that, according to some theories, may cause damage to nearby tissue. There are as yet no studies that prove these theories at cell phone energy levels. However, as the “nearby tissue” is typically the brain, let’s just take a minute to review the current state of affairs.

Cell phone signals, like radio and TV signals, and the microwave energy that warms the food in a microwave are types of electromagnetic radiation.

Electromagnetic Radiation is the name given to a very wide array of energies that among other things have the following trait in common: they have the ability to travel through empty space.

For example, sound, needs a medium to travel in such as air. No air, no sound. Electromagnetic radiation, such as light, can travel large distances through the vacuum of space, no air or ether needed.

Cell phone signals are usually in the part of the electromagnetic spectrum known as microwaves.

SAR stands for Specific Absorption Rate. It is a measure of how much electromagnetic energy is absorbed by tissue.

In the US, the government has set a SAR limit of 1.6 W/kg (the units are Watts per Kilogram) for devices to be held near the head. In Europe, where the government is more liberal, the limit is 2.0.

Although the vast majority of studies have shown no ill effects from cell phone use. There have been some studies that show some association with cataracts, brain tumor, spatial task performance and poor sleep. However, it has not been possible to reproduce these studies.

For example, there was a study in Europe where rabbits where exposed to radiation at SAR values in the 100 to 140 W/kg range for many hours. These values are about 100 times the typical energy of a cell phone. In the end, these rabbits developed clouding in their eye lenses, a.k.a.: cataracts.

Here is the theory behind that: Cell phone radiation, like all microwaves, can cause local heating. Even at 100 times cell phone levels, this is not a problem in the human body, as the steady stream of blood at its usual temperature of 98.6 F will warm up parts of the body that are below 98.6 F and cool down parts that are above 98.6 F. However, the eye lens does not have blood flowing though it. It has no way of directly cooling itself, and that is why it was targeted for this test.

Nevertheless, the current mainstream medical position is that health effects are very very unlikely to be caused by cell phone use.

To avoid the issue, all that is required is to keep even a little distance between your body and the phone:

  1. Use a wired hands free headset. Some say to use a ferrite bead in the wire to stop unwanted energy from using the wire as an antenna and traveling into your ear. I think antennas are typically carefully dimensioned and crafted devices and that a tangle of wire is not. However, since a ferrite bead should be about a $1.50, why not?
  2. Keep the phone in an outside pocket, or purse or on your desk, instead of your pants pocket.
  3. Minimize use inside a car, where the phone typically has to work at full power for its signal to escape the confines of the car.

Below is a list of some current phones with the lowest and highest SAR rating. Please note that these are the manufacturer’s reported highest ratings. Most phones, when in an area with a strong cellular signal, will broadcast at reduced power to increase battery life.

Please also note that when you walk around on a sunny day, you are exposing your head to much more than 10 times the heating energy than any of the phone s listed below generate.
