Celiac, a unique autoimmune disease triggered by ingesting gluten, is thought to affect 1 in every 133 people. The number may prove to be much higher as doctors become more aware of the disease and testing becomes more commonplace.
Gluten is a food component of the grains wheat, rye and barley and is present in many processed and packaged convenience foods although not prominently labeled.
Who is the CDF?
The Celiac Disease Foundation (CDF), founded in 1990, serves the mission of raising awareness and provides services and support through a variety of programs.
The annual Education Conference & Food Faire in Los Angeles is set for April 28, 2012 at the Hilton Universal City. This year’s conference is themed “Finding the Keys”, featuring top international researchers and speakers on Celiac and living the gluten free lifestyle.
First annual kid focused Celiac camp
In support of the special challenges of gluten free kids, the CDF offers their first Children’s Celiac Camp. Attendees will experience a week filled with fun activities and adventure within an environment of peers. The camp is open to ages 7-15 and will be located at CampFire USA Camp Nawakwa in southern California’s San Bernardino Mountains near Big Bear. The session runs from July 30-August 3 at a cost of $400.
CDF’s website provides a Kid’s Korner with information about groups and support chapters specific to the issues and challenges of a gluten free diet from grade school to young adult. Links to other camp opportunities outside of California are also provided.
