Celiac Disease and the Affordable Care Act

No matter what your views on health care reform are, it is important to understand how the Affordable Care Act will affect you. For people diagnosed with Celiac Disease, it can take away the stress of dealing with insurance companies.

Some insurance companies can deny an applicant for coverage because of an existing diagnosis of Celiac Disease. If you have gone through this - or know someone who has gone through this – you know the aggravation of being denied insurance. The health care reform takes away the fear of being denied.
As of July 1, 2010, states can opt to start a Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan or start a similar program in their Department of Health and Human Services. This plan will help to provide new options for people who have been uninsured for a minimum of six months because of a pre existing condition such as Celiac Disease. The full reform on pre-existing conditions will not take effect until 2014, as the government attempts to “bridge” immediate reform with long term reform. Note that on September 23, 2010 insurance companies cannot deny children under the age of 19 based on a pre-existing condition for new or group plans.

Remember this is just a small protion of the Affordable Care Act. Stay informed to know how health care reform will affect your life. Stay involved to make it the reform you want..
