Celebrity style includes capes, cowls, and ponchos

The turtleneck cape continues again this fall as celebrity fashionistas have spotted Kim Kardashian wearing more wool capes with cowl necklines. Indeed, Vogue's Fall Knitting preview 2011 focused on capes and cowls. And yes, even ponchos are hot and fashionable again, presenting a feast of choices for knitting and crochet - free patterns for your fall accessories wardrobe. Designer Eugenia Kim is showing the newsboy cap, slouchy berets by the dozen and twisted turban knitted hats, all at premium prices in trendy celebrity style.

There's a particularly stunning Eugenia Kim cowl priced at $176. Create a similar one, using two strands of yarn at once, white and gray, to create a staggered pattern. Begin by choosing 2 different colors of DK yarn. Using two threads, cast on 36 sts on a size US13 (9mm) 16" circular needle, join in the round without twisting the stitches, knit all rounds until you have achieved your desired width, bind off and whip in the ends. Voila!

(This pattern has been altered on 10-10-11. If your gauge is 2 sts = 1 in, then your finished cowl should be 18 inches wide. Should you want it wider, add 2 sts per inch desired.)

Short capes or cowls knit or crocheted a little longer to cover your shoulders are great for cooler afternoons watching a soccer game or running to the market. Here's a free pattern link posted by Angela Juergens for a Cape cowl neckwarmer pattern, using super bulky US15 Rowan Big Wool.

Knit this turtleneck poncho on a US10 (6mm) needle with or without the fringe for another cape and cowl combo wrap
Yarn gauge is 14 sts = 4 in and the free pattern requires a 32 inch circular needle for poncho in sizes S/M, L/XL, and XXL to XXXL.

Churchmouse Yarns and Teas of Bainbridge, WA posted an easy poncho pattern this week, one big rectangle, easy to knit and just sew up the side, with or without a cowl neckline. Sure looks like a winner. Purchase the pattern here.

Here's another free pattern for a shorter version, one size cape cowl knit in three colors on US 8 needle with a little crochet trim on the edge. For more capes and ponchos to knit and crochet, please visit knitnscribble.
