On yesterday's (Monday, January 7) "Take It Off Today" segment with Natalie Morales, Today Contributor and People StyleWatch editor Jill Martin and Today Show nutritionist Joy Bauer shared some celeb tips from Scarlett Johansson, Sofia Vergara, and Michelle Obama for a healthier new year and a new you.
Scarlett Johansson - Healthy Skin
Known for her glowing and flawless skin, the actress takes a less is more approach when it comes to her skin care. Unlike other celebs who indulge in expensive skin care products and creams, Scarlett swears by Cetaphil cleanser, which can be picked up at your local drugstore and is highly recommended by dermatologists. The actress also makes it a point to never go to bed with makeup on. When it's time for a red carpet premiere and her eyes are a little puffy, ScarJo reaches for whatever she can find in her freezer to reduce inflammation. The beauty also drinks plenty of water doing her long days on set to keep her skin in tip-top shape.
Joy Bauer Healthy Skin Tip: To get a gorgeous radiant complexion, eat bright orange and dark green produce such as carrots, spinach, kale, swiss chard and pumpkin.. The beta-carotene acts as nature’s exfoliant by getting rid of the old skin cells and laying down healthy new skin cells. Two handfuls of carrots a day, either raw or roasted, is a great place to start.
Sofia Vergara - Healthy Hair
Although everything about her is enviable, one of her many assets is her gorgeous, flowing hair. The Colombian stunner, who is a natural blonde, doesn't believe in a natural look (unless you are Gisele Bundchen, she says) and is an advocate of going glam. Though she may wear extensions occasionally, the actress mainly sports her natural locks. She attributes her mane to eating healthy, not depriving herself and drinking lots of water.
Joy Bauer Healthy Hair Tip: For beautiful hair, eat more iron. Iron helps circulate oxygen all over the body and to hair follicles, which stimulates growth. Oysters, clams, lean red meat, chicken, turkey, beans, lentils and spinach are wonderful sources of iron. Eat one cup of spinach a day and add couple of tablespoons of black beans or chick peas into salads, stews or pasta entrees to up your iron intake.
Michelle Obama - Healthy Body (Toned Arms)
The first lady keeps her entire body in great shape, but she is most well-known for her toned arms. Michelle Obama gets up at 5:30 a.m. to work out with the President before she drops the kids off at school. To keep her arms sexy and sleek, she does a 9-minute two phase workout with a trainer to make each muscle pop. She eats a healthy diet but if she wants a few french fries, she will have a few french fries.
Joy Bauer Healthy Arms Tip: Push-ups are most effective to tone and define arms. Aim for 2-3 sets most days of the week. Perform the push-ups on your toes if you can, but modified is okay as well. Incorporating protein throughout the day is key. 20-30 grams at breakfast, lunch and dinner is best. New muscle is more effectively built when protein is spread throughout the day versus eating it all at one meal.
