From vitamin injections to Hoodia why you may want to think twice about those so called healthy trends
Celebrities swear by their health habits and state they work wonderfully. However, science has a different opinion and some of their ideas can pose a danger to one's health.
Want to look and feel younger try vitamin injections according to Simon Cowell they make him “look and feel younger”. The injections contain a mix of vitamins C, B12 and magnesium. So do they really work? According to Ursula Arens, dietician with the British Dietetic Association believes that those injections most likely are not providing any benefit. Vitamin B injections have been used as a treatment for those who are deficient in the vitamin. Food intake is all you need to get your vitamins.
Madonna working with scientists to neutralize radiation. Cannot be done according to Dr. Nick Evans, environmental radio-chemist at Loughborough University,”Radio activity cannot be neutralized. “ It can only be moved from one place to another until it decays away at it's own rate.
Want to cleanse your system you could listen to Megan Fox and take vinegar shots or listen to the experts that this idea is not the greatest one on earth. According to Lucy Jones, Bariatric Dietitian at Homerton NHS Foundation trust , Dietitian at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, The body, including the liver, is a well-oiled detoxing machine, which will not be improved by vinegar, whether it be organic, apple cider, unfiltered, or your bog standard malt vinegar!” In all reality diet is the answer through foods such as lots of fiber in fruits and vegetables, beets and radishes are just two of the detoxifying foods. Green tea can cleanse and protect the liver. vitamin C, which helps the body produce glutathione, a liver compound that drives away .
The Master Cleanse diet (aka maple syrup, pepper, lemonade and cayenne diet) Beyoncé Knowles used it to prepare for Dream Girls and quickly lost twenty pounds and Naomi Campbell and Jared Leto have used it. Simply drink a quart of salt water in the morning, then consume 60 ounces of liquid mix of water, lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper throughout the day and when your day is done have a cup of laxative tea. The brilliant idea of this one is to restore energy, lose weight and help with chronic conditions such as arthritis.
So what does Harvard Medical School Health Publications think of this one? First off there is no scientific evidence. Much of the weight loss on this diet comes from fluid loss associated to an extremely low carbohydrates intake, frequent bowl movements and diarrhea resulting from the salt water and laxative tea. This diet is lacks fatty acids, protein and those essential nutrients. If you go on this diet you can have the risk of developing metabolic acidosis and when severe can lead to death and coma
The famous Grapefruit diet (aka Hollywood diet) that has been around for decades. Kylie Minogue, recording artist and actress sings its praises. Just consume half a grapefruit before you eat a healthy meal. Easy right? Not exactly since you can only consume less than 800 calories a day. The average healthy diet runs about 2,000 to 2,500 calories daily.
According to Connie Diekman, Director of University Nutrition at Washington University, it will have you lose weight but just like the Master Cleanse diet it will be primarily fluid loss and not fat that is linked to health risks. Not to mention this diet can interfere with certain prescription medications, some interactions can be mild but others may cause possibly dangerous health effects.
Let us not forget the warning put out by doctors in 2009 when a woman nearly lost her leg after being on the diet for only three days. A blood clot had developed when her contraceptive medication had interacted with the fruit.
Party like a rock star and skip the sleep. This seemed not work out so well for the party girl Lindsay Lohan, besides her alcohol routine which ends her up in rehab those late hours rack havoc on the body.
You can be more irritable then normal snapping at others for no apparent reason, you start to forget things more than normal, let us not forget the auto accidents from falling asleep behind the wheel. Long term effects are associated with serious medical conditions such as heart attack, heart failure, stroke and poor quality of life.
Those body wraps, slim wraps and more take off the weight like magic, Kim Zolciak of the Real House wives of Atlanta had stated “I lost inches and was able to get into my favorite jeans and they were even a little loose! I am a believer of LA Slim Wrap and plan to incorporate their wraps into my regular beauty routine." Sounds great yet physicians note there is no scientific evidence to back them. Susie Ellis of SpaFinder, Inc. , agrees partially, noting that after you take off the slim wrap you will notice an appearance of tightness, but it only last a day or two.
Dr. Elizabeth Tanzi, dermatologist and clinical instructor at John Hopkins University School of Medicine states “They won't give you permanent weight loss”. They can make you feel thinner and you may notice you lost a pound or two on the scale but that is water loss and it is only temporary. As for those cellulite wraps they will not take the dimples out of the skin or suck out that body fat.
The upside body wraps are great for stress and nervous tension. Check the ingredients before using a warp since a lot of them use fragrances. If taking medications check with your physician first. Some of the herbs used in wraps can be absorbed through the skin and affect some medications. Stay hydrated since you do a lot sweating from these wraps and if your claustrophobic they are not a good idea since you are wrapped like a mummy.
Those celebrity weight loss ideas that are promoted by those well known names of Hollywood that probably should have been left there. Angelina Jolie said to lost most of her weight from pregnancy due to the miracle of Hoodia. It is not just the women that sing its praises actor Joe Gannascoli, who plays Vito in the Sopranos, publicly endorsed Hoodia after he lost a substantial amount of weight. Gannascoli was quoted, "I still eat my Johnny Cakes and the food I want, just not as much. Hoodia curbs my appetite and cuts my cravings. “
Those famous endorsements are not lining up now since the FDA decided to pull the plug on the supplement after a clinical trial demonstrated it did not give a whole lot of weight loss but did provide you with a whole lot of side effects from vomiting to raising your blood pressure.
In the trial 49 healthy women participated. Those who had Hoodia with 1,100 milligrams in their diet had endured a total of 208 side effects.
It goes to show sometimes those great celebrity ideas for health seem to fail and do so badly with some persons experiencing some serious side effects.
Besides eating a healthy diet, green tea still holds strong for weight loss. Clinical trials have shown not only will it help burn fat but will also boost the metabolism. It does not work alone or makes claim it does it still tells you to have healthy meals and exercise to aide with weight loss.
Green tea supplements cost around ten dollars or less.
